Somewhere in the United States there are innocent puppies being mistreated. Raids on puppy mills happen almost weekly, and rings of dog fights are broken several times a week across the country. This treatment of animals cannot continue. Humane Societies throughout the United States are readily available to combat this behavior. The Seattle Humane Society, WA is one of these facilities.
Last Thursday I found a break in my work, and chose to take a look at the adoptable dogs at the Seattle Humane Society Bellevue, Washington. While looking through the lists, a pair of eyes caught my own. They looked up through the photo, and found their way to my heart. I knew that if I waited, this sweet dog would no longer be available when I left work in two hours. I immediately called Steven and asked if he could go to the Seattle Humane Society, and take a look at “Freckles.” Steven agreed, and within the hour he called advising that “Freckles” was still available and that he would pick me up, and we could go back to the Humane Society Adoption Center together.
At the center, they allowed us to “Get Acquainted” with the puppy that we were choosing to adopt. In a fenced off portion of the campus we were able to build a bond with “Freckles.” This miniature dachshund was VERY timid, and feared the tennis ball if it bounced higher than he was. Which, wasn’t very high.
After 40 minutes of getting acquainted, mom, Ryan, and Rhissa showed up to vote on the puppy….which I was already attached to. The vote passed, and “Freckles” was able to come home the next day. On Friday, May 1st Steven and I picked up “Freckles” from the Humane Society Seattle to come home.
Although timid and shy, ”Freckles” warmed up to the family quicker than anticipated. Within 24 hours he trusted us on walks, and even began playing in the backyard. While indoors, he LOVES to cuddle. And an empty lap is always fair game. “Manny” has now found a home that he can be loved.
His previous owners gave him up because he “soiled in the house 3-4 times a day.” Within the 5 days that we’ve had him, he has NOT ONCE soiled in the house. In fact, he will wait until his morning walk to go “potty.” His previous owners also indicated that he had a “barking problem.” Over the last 5 days, ”Manny” has barked ONCE. We were getting worried that maybe his previous owners had cut his vocal chords (which we’ve found out ACTUALLY happens)!
This puppy is NOTHING like the one indicated in his paperwork, and he is EVERYTHING that we were looking for in a new best friend.
If you are looking for a puppy, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take a look at your local Humane Society. There are animals that need homes, and people to love them. Steven and I have now adopted a cat from the Denver Dumb Friends League, and a puppy from the Seattle Humane Society, and both animals have added warmth and care in our hearts.

Don’t let these sweet animals live another day in over populated kennels. Bring them home and let them love you!
Be yourself! Everyone else is taken.
