Kelp Helps

July 19th, 2010

It may have been because I’ve been over thinking everything…or that I’m at a major crossroads in my life. Either way, last weekend at Alki beach, the kelp talked to me.

We were spending our family day in the sunshine, exploring a new part of town. Although the full lunch told us to go home and sleep, the beach song called us to the shore. Rhissa promptly pulled up a spot to lie down, Ryan and Jaime cuddled for warmth while taking in the. cityscape, and mom and I stared at a jumble of kelp floating on the surface of the water.

After several minutes of sitting and watching this clump of kelp I started to hear it’s journey and the parallels it made in my life.

Kelp grows up in a world that isn’t the most stable. They don’t move to better climates, they make the best of their surroundings and “go with the flow.” The kelp spend a good portion of their life sheltering smaller fish and providing nutritients to the ocean. At some point, the kelp are removed from their stable existence and tossed into the great wide ocean. They are required to go in the direction the wave takes them.

Like kelp, my environment has not been the most stable. But what we lacked in stability, we gained in compassion and love, just like the kelp. At graduation I was up rooted and sent in the direction the waves were headed, college. Since then I’ve been a drift, at the mercy of the winds.

My path will change as the season in my life change. Eventually I will anchor again, and my life will be grounded and swaying in the current.

Until then, “anyway the wind blows.”

Are fight or flight my ONLY options?

June 30th, 2010

Overtime I’ve aquired fears for the following things:

Birds- because they can attack your face and you can’t always see them coming.

Clowns (and chainsaws)- because of an extensive haunted house marathon in college.

Heights- this is MOST recent.  I hadn’t realized I was THIS terrified until I found myself screaming uncontrollably on a FERRIS WHEEL.

In any of the above cases I’d prefer not to fight.  That would require me to stay present in the situation and if you think I’m going to stick around and duke it out with a clown, forget about it!  However, I’d also prefer not to flee (flight).  Running from a clown only makes them chase you more, and TRYING to run from a bird is almost impossible.  They FLY!

I propose another option, GLITTER!!  I believe that if I carry a small vile of glitter at all times I will not be afraid.  If approached by a clown, I can throw glitter in his face.  To me, the glitter will make him less imposing.  He becomes “fairy-like.”  If I throw glitter at a bird, they will likely fly away as projectiles hurling at them, no matter the size, will distract from any ideas of attack on my face..

I’m still working out the kinks on the effectiveness of glitter on height.  But I believe, if I put glitter on near to anything, it instantly becomes prettier, and more acceptable to my psyche.

What are YOUR fears??

Be Yourself.  Everyone else is TAKEN. :)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RYAN!

June 2nd, 2010

The past 19 years of my life have been graced the presence of my sweet little brother.  Not like a typical little brother, Ryan has always been my shoulder to cry on.  He takes care of his little sister, and our family.  His grandma adores him.  See video below, of just how much love she is willing to show.

Grandma got Ryan!

Thank you for the last 19 years, and I can’t wait to celebrate at least 19 more little brother! :)

Glitter, glitter, EVERYWHERE!

June 2nd, 2010

There are many “firsts” in life that someone can be proud of.  They are more than just the ”First car” or “First kiss.”  These are things like “First time to watch a movie without your parents” and “First time to buy a pair of shoes on your own.”  These are firsts that you may not always celebrate, but ones that you will NEVER forget.

Last night, Rhissa and I made a tutu!  Her school was having a spirit day, and neither of us knew where to buy a tutu.  After careful research, we found that the only supplies needed were some tulle and elastic.

This project turned out far better than expected, and now Rhissa and I can add yet another “first” to our list.

Do YOU have a first that you’d like to share?

Kids are funny…#2

May 28th, 2010

Tyler was about three years old, when he realized how harmless he was.

During an especially long trip to the car dealership with his mom, Tyler needed to wander.  Like any other three year-old, talking about purchasing car was no where near as exciting, as running around IN them.

On most outings when Tyler wanted to wander, Mommy Deb would say “Don’t go too far, people can be dangerous,”  and he’d come back to an area where his mom would be able to see him.

This time, as Tyler started to depart from the car conversation, he looked back at his parents, raised is arms, and in a downward calming motion exclaimed “Don’t worry mom.  I won’t be dangerous.”

Kids are funny… #1

May 28th, 2010

When my baby cousin Emma was three, she loved doing EVERYTHING all the big kids got to do.  Including, wear lip moisturizer.

On several occassions, she would see someone put lip moisturizer on, and say “Rhem…. lips?” and she would point to her tiny little lips.  After applying a thin coat, she would anxiously lick it all off!

Kids are funny!

No reservations…

May 12th, 2010

Nothing could be worse, than having to attend a glorious wedding event, and spending a fortune in traveling costs. This is why Steven and I have done our very best to set up hotel and flight accomodations that hopefully move that decimal further to the left.

Tips:

Airfare
Alaska/Horizon Air Group can set up a “Conference” for your wedding party. This allows your guests to book with a specific code, and receive up to 7% off their posted fare. There is no expiration or fine print, it’s just a good deal!

Hotel
We’ve booked the nearby extended stay suites. They proved to be more cost effective, and provide our guests with more ammenities.
My suggestion is to just call around. It’s a lot of legwork, but your guests will appreciate it, and it may even be the determining factor in their attendance.

Other things you may consider are rental car companies, and providing gift baskets to their rooms, upon arrival. Your out-of-town guests will likely treat your wedding as vacation. In which case, it’s nice to be able to help make that vacation run smoothly.

Invitations

April 26th, 2010

Ink on paper. That’s all an invitation is. It is a mass mailer, invading the mailboxes of unknowing recipients. However, what seperates a wedding invitation from “junk mail” is it’s exclusivity, and of course, it’s purpose. People don’t automatically throw away invites, but within several months, it does reach the untimely demise of the recycling bin.

A tip to all INFJ brides, DO NOT OVER ANALYZE THE INVITE. Although family and friends would like to receive the most exquisite piece of parchment man can make, they will never know that you passed up the hand-made, gold raised ink invites, for the card stock Costco special. Even though your invite is embossed (usually a $.75/invite savings from raised), and on white card stock, it will be cherished until the day after your event. Because it’s not what the print is on, it’s what the print announces.

The wording of your invitation is more important than how it is presented. Many will tell you different, and many will be correct. But in the end, if you have to compromise luxury for price, make sure that the printed copy is accurate, and informational. You can always “pretty up” a simple invite with crafting. You CAN’T reword the invite.

In the end, your invitations will be distributed and your guests will look forward to the big day as much as you are. So don’t stress over the paper…it’ll be recycle in the end.

Be Yourself! Everyone else is taken. :)

Say “Cheese!”

April 16th, 2010

Almost every girl wants to feel pretty.  Having people follow you around, taking pictures of you, you start to feel GORGEOUS!  You feel like a rock-star, a supermodel,  A PRINCESS!  This was how I felt at mine and Steven’s engagement photo session yesterday evening.

As an INFJ personality, I spent the night before making sure that we had the proper attire.  In fact, I emailed the photographer to verify what we were “supposed to wear” and if we should bring “props.”  As an ISFP personality, Steven laughed at me and said “so what do you want me to wear?”  He knew better than to make fun of my “over-detailing.” :P

On the day of the shoot, Debbie Fisher educated me in make-up.

Debbie Weisberg and her wonderful sister Rose helped fix my hair:

During my “make-over,” Steven (ISFP) while completing other wedding related tasks, shaved.  That’s all…JUST SHAVED!  Understood that he’s a boy, but REALLY?!?!

Anyways, after traffic jams, we arrived at the shoot with our entourage, my sister and Manny (see twitter pics of Baby Sister during the session).  For the next hour and a half we were told where to stand, how to tilt our heads, and “SMILE BIG!”  We jumped off rocks, played in the water, laid out on the grass, and had several eskimo kisses along the way.

By the end of it,  Steven was tired of smiling, I was craving a Big Mac, and the photographers were satisfied with their vault of pictures.  All in all, the experience was wonderful.  Our photographers kept us relaxed, and we spent a nice “date night” walking around the gardens and having it chronicled by professionals.

I couldn’t have asked for a better photography team, and most importantly a better fiance’.  The hour and a half I spent looking at him, I began to once again remember why we’re getting married, and that we are so blessed to have eachother.
